ELVIS IN HELL (REVISITED) hits top ten in Broadjam Chicago Blues chart
Posted: Dec 1, 2006
|
ELVIS IN HELL (REVISITED) is top ten on the Chicago Blues chart.
When asked for a comment Captain Rick said, "This is the sweetest charting on Broadjam yet for me. I gotta admit being ambivalent about being "prog rock" but the blues is where I live musically. Chris Forehan and I wrote the lyrics of this song twenty years ago and it has always been a personal favourite. I say do yourself a favour and play the song and maybe, just maybe, download it. It is the wrong crowd's fastest mover.

Moose the Mooche hits top ten in Jazz-Modern Broadjam Chart
Posted: Nov 21, 2006
|
The Wrong Crowd's string of hits on Broadjam continues with MOOSE THE MOOCHE hitting top ten on the Broadjam Jazz -modern chart.
"I think it is a tribute to the fine musicians on the recording, and the concept of the arrangement that is being recognised here", said producer Captain Rick, as he relaxed at the Flemington Race Course. "These musicians have a fine track record at regional meets, and class will aways rise to its natural level. For a sure thing, back The Wrong Crowd early and often, and then sit back and watch the rewards flow. At the track or in the music biz the strategy is always the same for me". |

Wild Woman a Prog Rock Hit
Posted: Nov 7, 2006
|
Wild Woman has entered the top ten of the Broadjam "progressive rock" charts.
"All this time I was thinking the way to success was by imitating Leon Russell", said a jubilant Captain Rick, "and then an instrumental hits the charts. Who can figure?"
"I'm glad the reviewers like the music. Recording the harmonica part was a real lung buster. I like the fact that traditional blues instrumentation like harmonica and slide guitar can be mixed with soprano sax and synths and be recieved with some kind of critical acclaim".

The Wrong Crowd slammed by Broadjam reviewer shock!
Posted: Sep 11, 2006
|
A 56 year old male live performer from Ohio has suggested that ELVIS IN HELL should be re-titled "I Truly Suck", and given the lowest possible rating on every criteria
For the positive constructive comment he wrote:"If this was the effect for which you were going, you got it. This, whatever it is, has no redeeming value what-so-ever. This isn't personal... I don't know you."
Then the boots were really on for his suggestions for improvement:"Horrible vocal.. people just can't sing anymore. You can see that just by tuning into American Idol. Taylor Hicks... yeah, right. Learn something about the harp. This is scary."
Captain Rick responds:"Reviews like this could really hurt someone sensitive, Just as well that I delight in upsetting provincial babyboomers. Honestly we intend to kick his ass if we are ever careless enough to end up in Akron or wherever." |

Is Captain Rick a Leon Russell imitator?
Posted: Sep 8, 2006
|
Recent review of the THE WRONG CROWD (REHEATED):
"Okay so the Leon Russell impression is kinda weird. So is the whole song, something like Captain Beefheart-era Zappa. It's okay, if this is a departure, or part of some big concept album, but otherwise, I would say it could get to be a bit much -- in fact, it gets to be a bit much by the end of the song, actually. 3 minutes of this would have been enough. Interesting, but then again, interesting is a funny word."
Captain Rick replies: "Leon Russell, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa are far more interesting than any contemporary artists with the possible exceptions of Joe Henry and Bob Dylan. I am thrilled to be placed in their orbit." |

Now’s the Time hits the #1 spot on Australian broadjam chart
And #3 on Jazz and Jazz contemporary chart.
Reviews of The Wrong Crowd’s music
Now’s the Time
Great jam session. Tight.
loved the mix traditional and modern sounds with surprises here and there
Coupe
Love the intro...shit just hits you..beat is banging...instrumentation is nice...very jazzy...mello vibe...sax is nice...love the ambient feel throughout the track...overall a pretty nice joint.
Jazzy; lots of groove. I especially like the sax instrumentation. Good quality recording.
CX2400#2
Very cool piece. The percussion and effects are outrageous.
Elvis in Hell
It’s different. Definately NOT a punk song! Maybe a punk band, but not a punk song. When I hear "Punk" I usually want to drink a s\l of JD, get in fights, and kick and break stuff. This song mad me want to start using heroin
Flash photography
solid sax playing and groovin' bass-line.
Great Ocean Road
Great song. Great touch on the soloes
He’s from Dallas
Interesting song, but I'm not quite sure what to make of it. But whatever you are doing, it sounds like you do it pretty well, so keep it going. Best of luck.
Interesting intro. sounds experimental and edgy. instrumentation in ELF range (extremely low frequency), good for elephants. did ya slow this tune down digitally?? lyrics are pretty much incomprehensible, but textures are entertaining. vocal sounds like he's nodding off to sleep. guitar player sounds like brontasaurus. yea, this has gotta be slowed down digitally. tho the beat seems in the ballpark. sax kinda cool texture. stream-of-consciousness lyrics engaging in places. chord pattern vagurely like that tune "people keep on cryin." (forget the name), but that's okay.
In the land of the dead
Maybe this was an experiment in tonality or in intervalic understanding, but this piece did very little for me personally.
Jungled
I liked the song alot it had a nice groove. I would like to listen to more. The only downside was the guitar playing. It was very akward sounding. A little to raw and un-polished as far as the guitar. But overall I still enjoyed it.
Make Me Rich
pretty cool, like the vibes
i really like the hook, assuming the horns represent the hook. its slow and deep, very swank sounding, kind of like an old detective movie, which sounded cool with the fast drums, i also like the experiemental element to the song
very progressive, but i feel like everything is disconnected. true, it does always come back to the horns, but right off the bat the drums sound off. not everything is in sync with one another, and there really isn't transition. i would just say that the main source of the problems is the arrangement
It's more Prog-Rock than Funk, in a musical sense. Very experimental. At the same time, it's almost like a TV COP Soundtrack--except, said 'Tv Cop' must've been trapped in a timewarp. Extremely unique. That same extreme uniqeness: pretty quirky for folks who might expect a 'basic '70s tribute'. Well, their loss, because this is an attention-getting piece.
Octo
i like the texture and the Jazz tapestry that you've created. Much success!
Would do really well for film/TV
The Colour of Truth
Instruments are not out front enough until after 1 minutes--then it all comes together--but I like to hear melody out front from beginning. Then again, that's just me.
The Wrong Crowd
Nice funky riff. The bass playing is he strong point of the song. The flute is cool. The vocals are week spot. I don't really hear any definable vocal melodies that get me hooked in the song. I'm not sure with the hook is? It sounds like your talkin' to me and not singin' to me.
Funktastic Swamp Blues! COme on!! This really is Dr John in full night-tripping mode! Man I love this song! I could barely pick out the drawl of the lyrics and the ones I could pick out were out there...just the way it should be. Yes! Yes! Yes! More please!
Things ain’t what they used to be
Love that big band sound, great job on the keys especialy at the into. Good over all mood. Very nostalgic but still remains modern. Nice cut.
Good musicianship, jazzy number, Can tell that these are long time, seasoned musicians, fun and upbeat, i'm positive this band would be fun to see live..........
Nice interplay between instruments; especially the horn and harmonica parts. The piano and bass did a nice job of holding the rhythm. The solos and melody lines were solid --
Tripping the light bombastic
The percussion in this track really adds a wonderful organic quality to the music. Ditto for the clarinet! A retro hip coolness pervades. This is nighttime music. Full of tension and release. Despite a singular key center, it is still interesting thanks to the textures.
The Woman Chaser
Disjointed construction - the different elements don't flow well. It sounds like a song made from middle eight sections without a clear theme or movement. Guitar needs to be tuned before recording it as the intro was painful to listen to, I'm afraid
kinda cool, not really funk though - great recording
